Music & Us: Our New Playlist

Image
For this blog, I've chosen four countries across different continents that illuminate diverse cultures. I've chosen tracks from Brazil, Jamaica, France, and Japan, each offering a unique musical identity. My aim is to showcase both traditional and contemporary genres, demonstrating how musical expression evolves while retaining its cultural roots. Each selection, from the raw energy of Brazilian funk to the depth of Japanese taiko drumming, tells a story, highlighting the historical, emotional, and social significance of these traditions.  Brazilian funk, or funk carioca, is a modern genre born in Rio de Janeiro's favelas that blends Afro-Brazilian rhythms with hip-hop beats and raw vocals. I chose this music because I enjoy listening to this music, as I was introduced by my best friend, who is Brazilian. "Vai Com Bundão," a music that I've heard before, highlights the energetic, dance-centered, and socially raw tone that defines today's Brazilian funk. Be...

Music & Family

For this assignment, I decided to have a discussion with my mom about her relationship with music. I had to do this over the phone since I am unable to speak to her in person because I am all the way from Texas. During our phone conversation, my mom shared how music played a small but joyful role in her childhood, even though she said that it wasn't something she had constant access to. She explained how she grew up in a home where music wasn't played every day, but when it was, it brought the family together and filled their space with happiness. She said that most of the music she listened to as a child was instrumental, often featuring violins and singers that created an emotional atmosphere. Listening to music as a kid was different for her; she stated that they listened to music on the Radio that her mother bought for her and her siblings. Her mom was actually the one who first introduced her and her siblings to music, making it something that connected their family. When ...

Music & Traditions

Music has always been important to me, especially when it connects to the traditions and events that I grew up doing. This music connects deeper into my culture and family celebrations. Two songs in particular, “No Crezcas Mas” by Tercer Cielo and “La Parranda (Sei Sei Sei)” by Kazzabe, mean a lot to me both emotionally and culturally. These songs are more than just tunes; they remind me of important moments and special memories in my life. “No Crezcas Mas” is a song that takes me back to the beautiful tradition of quinceañeras, a celebration that marks a transition from childhood to womanhood in many Latin American cultures. This song, with its emotional lyrics and gentle melody, captures the bittersweet feeling of growing up. It is often played during the father-daughter dance. The lyrics speak to the love that families feel as they watch their daughters grow. For me, this just reminds me of all the quinceañeras that I have had to attend in my family and takes me back to those moment...

Music & Me

Hello Everybody! My name is Andy Alvarenga. I am a student-athlete here at Converse University, where I am a member of the Men's Soccer team. I've listened to music my whole life, but never got into becoming a musician. I began by listening to the types of music my family would listen to, which was mostly Latin music. However, as I got older, I started to develop my own style of music, incorporating some of my parents' and brothers' music tastes.  I grew up in McKinney, Texas, and moved to a neighboring town, Melissa, Texas, about 5 years ago. I attended McKinney North High School before coming to Converse and played for a local club soccer team by the name of FC Dallas. I am also from Honduras. I was born in the US, but my parents are from Honduras. I am majoring in Accounting and hope to become an accountant after graduating from college. 1. Music that I like right now. I mostly listen to music when I am driving or before a game, but I have recently started to like ju...
