For this assignment, I decided to have a discussion with my mom about her relationship with music. I had to do this over the phone since I am unable to speak to her in person because I am all the way from Texas. During our phone conversation, my mom shared how music played a small but joyful role in her childhood, even though she said that it wasn't something she had constant access to. Music has always been important to me, especially when it connects to the traditions and events that I grew up doing. This music connects deeper into my culture and family celebrations. Two songs in particular, “No Crezcas Mas” by Tercer Cielo and “La Parranda (Sei Sei Sei)” by Kazzabe, mean a lot to me both emotionally and culturally. These songs are more than just tunes; they remind me of important moments and special memories in my life. “No Crezcas Mas” is a song that takes me back to the beautiful tradition of quinceañeras, a celebration that marks a transition from childhood to womanhood in many Latin American cultures. This song, with its emotional lyrics and gentle melody, captures the bittersweet feeling of growing up. It is often played during the father-daughter dance. The lyrics speak to the love that families feel as they watch their daughters grow.
